Changes ★

Hello my friends! So... I have been thinking about this for a long time, but every time I am back on set or spend time with my friends in the movie industry, it hits me again, hard. I always tell them: "I feel like my blog does not really represents who I am". See I started the blog to document my journey in filmmaking two years ago and since, it has become a lot about fashion. But the thing is: all I really care about is movies and movie making. That's my whole life. It consumes my thoughts, it inspires my style, it's more than a job, to me it's my life's calling.

I think for the first few years it was a total learning curve, both blogging and movie making wise. Lately, Ramiro and I have been talking a lot about our public image and the our marketing philosophy for the movie and right now, I need my blog to match who I really am : a no nonsense movie producer that, even though is inspired by personal style, will always choose going to a movie festival over going to Fashion Week and going to the theater rather than shopping. I make independent movies and hope this will always be. I believe we can walk to the beat of our own drum and accomplish our dreams. That's just me. And I can't imagine it being any other way.

Every moment of my life is inspired by movie making. That's my voice. This is what makes me unique. This is what keeps me happy. This is what makes Virginie. Everyday I care about my movies. But not everyday I care about my outfit. And the blogs that inspire me the most these days are not about fashion, but rather about creating a unique and inspiring lifestyle...

And so for a while I have been thinking about starting a new blog all together, to nurture that intense need I have right now for everything to point in the same direction: movie making. But I realize I have so many amazing filmmaking memories here, like my film festival travels (to Cannes, Chicoutimi again and again and Moncton too) and my days at the filmmaker's coop, from making Super-8MM films to putting together a cine-club for my city. Here I also have all the memories of the 24 videos I shot on roof tops. So here is where my journey has to continue. It's just shifting gear. And there will still be outfits of course, just presented differently.

As I turned 30 this week, I am taking the opportunity to start a new decade fresh and to stop saying "I don't feel like my blog represents who I am" and just do something about it. I'm also rejecting all "popularity" factors and numbers, that's why I'll be closing my Facebook page and Google Friend Connect button. I'll still be sharing bits of my adventures on Twitter and I'll still be one of the only blogs on filmmaking on Bloglovin'. Followers are not going to help me win an Oscar...

I have so many exciting travels and events coming, there won't be one dull moment on Virginie's Cinema, that's for sure.

ps: I've updated my about page, check it out!

  5. I think this is a good decision virginie! I'll for sure continue to read your blog, I don't know anything about movie-making or the movie scene, and I can't wait to learn more about it! - It's a bit like with my blog, I really couldn't write only about fashion, but my goal is also to bring classical music and opera to people that normally wouldn't listen to "this" music. and to be honest - one single email that tells me something like "I've never heard this piece of music by Brahms/Mozart/however before, but after I read your post, I listened to it and I really loved it" - makes me more happy than every comment about an outfit I'm wearing - and I'm not saying that I don't appreciate the outfit comments, I've nobody in my "real life" to share my fashion passion with, but it makes me so happy to get somebody to hear a beautiful piece of music.
You could perhaps make a post about your favorite filmscenes? I would find that really interesting! I recently decided to attach at each post a youtube video that I love, a bit like "a little bit of music for this day" ;-) Make out of your blog what you want it to be, it's really not about the "numbers" - look at me, I have so few followers ;-)

    1. I'm definitely inspired by your blog Anita and the way you include your passion on a daily basis. I'm kind of the same: my gratification comes from the e-mails I get asking for advice on following your dreams in the movie industry and my favorite comments are always the ones about my movie projects :)

I'm so glad our own personal quest for the right blog format has made us connect dear and that we are daring to make our blog to our own unique image!

  8. Blogs succeed only when we're enthusiastic and your joy lies in film so that's where your blogging should go. Turning 30 is always an important juncture where you take stock of the direction you're heading and make any necessary adjustments.

  10. Sounds good to me, Virginie! I always struggle a bit with whether my blog has much to do with who I am... and whether it maybe turns me into a person I don't want to be (she says while editing outfit photos). I loved your blog from way back, as much for the voice, the cinema and the glimpses of Quebec as for the style, so I'll definitely be sticking around! And yay for bowing out of the stupid popularity ratrace!

    1. Thanks for the sweet words on my blog Emily, it means a lot to have had you as a reader form the start when I didn't know what HTML meant or how to resize my pictures!

I see it not so much as bowing out of the social media popularity race but rather choosing not to take part in the madness...

I love your blog as it is, you have found the perfect balance or travels and fab style :)

  14. Virginie...I think you are the bee's knees. I applaud you for following your heart and your dreams! There comes a moment, in this fantastic world that is blogging, when you realized that all that really matters is being true to yourself. Once upon a time, as I'm sure you remember, I fancied myself a fashion blogger...but lately, I have morphed my little blog into exactly what it was meant to be: an open (unending) love letter to my little Hudson, charting adventures and everyday activities, ups and downs....capturing our life. And I am so happy to have met so many wonderful people along this journey (especially YOU!), but I am with you on staying true and being yourself and writing about whatever you darn well please! SO a big pat on the back and a HUG to you, lady. You WILL have that Oscar one day...and I hope when that day comes we will still be connected through this amazing blogosphere. Lots of LOVE to you. You are awesome. ALWAYS. xoxoxo

(and is it a coincidence that I also made these changes in my blog as I approached my 30th year? I think we are getting wiser with age, my friend.) :D

  17. Yay! I feel that way too, I'm overhauling my blog when I get time, for a similar direction! I'd also really love to get some tips on feature film making at some point, my husband and I are about to start writing our first feature and could use some pointers.

    1. I'm thinking of doing a "what I learned" column on the blog sharing tips I have discovered and found useful along the way of making our first feature. I'm also asking Ramiro to help me put together a scriptwriting column since that's his full time job...

If you have any questions never hesitate to e-mail me Brooke, it would be my pleasure to help you guys :)
